Managers

Empower your teams by highlighting the qualities of effective managers, offering development opportunities, and celebrating excellent leadership.

Management at Google hasn't always gotten the credit it deserves. In 2002, we ran an "experiment" to see how successful the organization could be without managers. The experiment failed. In 2008, another research team set out to prove that managers don't matter. Spoiler: they matter. That's when we shifted focus and launched a research initiative called "Project Oxygen" to uncover what leadership skills are needed to make the perfect boss at Google. These insights informed new management development programs and skills training, focusing on leadership, decision-making, collaboration, team empowerment, motivation, communication, development, and fostering a shared vision. As a result, we saw improvements across all management levels at Google.
